Requirements follow your organisation’s context

SEBI-regulated entities

SEBI’s CSCRF specifies half-yearly red-team exercises for Market Infrastructure Institutions and Qualified Regulated Entities. The red team must be independent of the function tested. The framework also addresses VAPT, remediation validation and governance of findings.

The August 2025 clarifications introduce scope and equivalence principles for entities under multiple regulators. Confirm your category, current circulars and applicable controls before deciding the engagement.

CERT-In audit guidance

CERT-In’s 2025 audit policy guidance covers scope, technical and process assessments, evidence, reporting and follow-up. It is a useful basis for organising an asset inventory, identifying readiness gaps and preparing control evidence.

For a report intended for a regulator, tender or certification process, confirm the recipient’s provider eligibility and reporting criteria before appointing the engagement. These requirements help define the right route from the outset.

Financial services and other regulated sectors

Start with the current directions for your precise entity type and business activity, including the relevant RBI framework where applicable. Capture the required coverage, review frequency, report recipients and approval route in the brief.

There is also a business reason to test

Enterprise procurement, insurer questions, material system changes and internal risk reviews can all create an assessment need. A defined scope makes the evidence more useful to the people making the decision.

  • A customer is waiting: connect the assessment to their questionnaire and report criteria.
  • A release is approaching: focus on changed workflows, integrations and important user roles.
  • The environment has expanded: review new exposure, privileged access and cloud configuration.
  • Detection needs validation: define the scenarios, observable signals and response objectives.

Controlled testing starts with a clear agreement

Before testing begins, agree the asset owner’s written authorisation, boundaries, permitted techniques, testing window and emergency contacts. Red-team exercises also need explicit objectives, stop conditions and a clear evidence-handling plan.

That preparation keeps the exercise focused and gives stakeholders a shared understanding of what the result will demonstrate.
