Vendor reviews: evidence that fits the service
A broad questionnaire is less useful than a focused view of what the supplier actually handles.
Understand the service first
A payroll platform, a hosting provider and a marketing agency touch different information and systems. Start with the specific service, access and dependencies. That context should determine the depth of the assessment.
Ask whether the evidence covers your use
A report or certificate may cover a particular entity, service or period. Check those boundaries before relying on it. Where coverage is unclear, ask the supplier to explain the relationship to the service you are buying.
Sample an operating control
A policy states an intention. An access review, incident exercise or change record can show how a control operates. Select evidence proportionate to risk and handle it through an agreed confidential channel.
Turn gaps into decisions
State the gap, the consequence for the service and the action expected. Give each action an owner and a review point. Separate accepted risk from work that is still open, so the onboarding decision remains understandable later.
Keep the assessment current
A new integration, data location or subcontractor may change the risk. Record reassessment triggers and track earlier actions. Renewal should revisit the service and evidence rather than simply reusing the old questionnaire.
