How to read a VAPT report beyond the severity labels

Use coverage, evidence and context to decide what to fix first.

Read the scope before the findings

The report should identify environments, assets, versions, roles and relevant limitations. A clean result for one application build is not evidence about an untested service. Check the dates and access assumptions before using the report in another decision.

Look for a reproducible condition

A useful finding explains the affected component, the prerequisites and the observed result. Evidence should be sufficient to understand the issue without unnecessarily exposing sensitive data. Ask for clarification when a finding consists only of a scanner title.

Connect severity to your business

Technical severity is one input. Exposure, the importance of the workflow and existing controls also influence priority. A lower-rated issue on a critical path may need earlier attention than an isolated issue with substantial prerequisites.

Give the fix an acceptance criterion

The engineer needs to know what successful remediation means. Tie the change to the original condition and identify the tests that should fail or pass afterwards. Keep broader hardening suggestions separate from the change required to close the finding.

Use retesting as evidence

Retest status should refer to the version, environment and condition actually checked. Fixed, partially fixed and not retested are different outcomes. Preserve that distinction when producing a summary for management or a customer.
