Internal vs external network VAPT

Two different starting positions reveal different weaknesses. Here is how to choose the coverage you need.

The starting position changes the question

External testing examines the services reachable from outside your environment. Internal testing starts from an agreed position within it. A strong external perimeter does not establish what an ordinary internal device can reach.

What external coverage can include

Public IP addresses, externally available services, remote access gateways and management exposure can form part of the scope. Asset ownership matters: an address behind a shared hosting or content-delivery service may not represent infrastructure you control.

What internal coverage adds

Internal work can assess selected services, patch gaps and network separation. State whether the test begins from a user network, a server segment or another position. Segmentation evidence is meaningful only when the source position and destination are known.

Configuration review answers another question

A firewall configuration review can explain why a path is allowed. A reachability test shows what is observed from a particular position. Combining the two may be useful, but they should remain distinct activities in the coverage record.

Plan a practical first engagement

Start with your critical services and a current network diagram. Identify public exposure, internal trust boundaries and the systems that need careful scheduling. Ask for an asset-level coverage list and a report that separates confirmed issues from untested assumptions.
